Songkran Beyond the Water: Renewal, Respect and Joy

Songkran is Thailand’s traditional New Year festival and was inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2023. For Thai families, the season can include visiting elders, making merit, cleaning homes, offering respectful wishes and sharing time together. Water carries the idea of cleansing and a fresh beginning, while today’s joyful water celebrations have become the festival’s most visible international image. For visitors, enjoying Songkran becomes richer when the fun is seen alongside its quieter values of gratitude, renewal and community. The festival shows how Thai culture can hold reverence and playfulness in the same moment. Which side of Songkran would you most like to experience?
