Ayutthaya Day Trip from Bangkok by Private Car: Itinerary, Timing and Cost
Updated: Oct 16
Ayutthaya was the capital of the Siamese kingdom for more than four centuries, from 1351 until 1767, and its ruins are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It sits roughly 80 km north of central Bangkok, which makes it one of the easiest full-day trips from the city. The challenge is not distance, it is choosing which temples to see before the midday heat sets in. This guide gives you a route that works, the timing that matters and what a private car costs.
How far is Ayutthaya from Bangkok?
Expect about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes by road from central Bangkok, depending on traffic and where you are picked up. Leaving before 8:00 avoids the worst of the morning rush and gets you to the first temple while it is still cool.
A realistic one-day Ayutthaya itinerary
Most visitors try to see too much. Five or six stops with proper time at each is better than ten rushed ones. A private driver lets you change the order on the day if a site is crowded.
07:30 – Hotel pickup in Bangkok. Bring water, sun protection and clothing that covers shoulders and knees.
09:00 – Wat Mahathat. Home of the famous Buddha head entwined in tree roots. Arrive early for photos without crowds, and remember to crouch or kneel so your head is lower than the Buddha's when taking a picture.
10:15 – Wat Phra Si Sanphet. The three tall chedis of the former royal temple are the most photographed sight in Ayutthaya. Viharn Phra Mongkhon Bophit, with its large bronze Buddha, is next door.
11:30 – Wat Ratchaburana. Quieter than its neighbours, with a well-preserved central prang you can climb partway into.
12:30 – Lunch. River prawns are the local speciality. Your driver can suggest a riverside restaurant that suits your budget.
14:00 – Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon. A large reclining Buddha and rows of saffron-robed statues, located southeast of the island.
15:30 – Wat Chaiwatthanaram. On the west bank of the river, this Khmer-style temple is beautiful in late-afternoon light.
17:00 – Return to Bangkok.
Add Bang Pa-In Palace?
Bang Pa-In, the former royal summer palace, lies about 20 km south of Ayutthaya and is easy to add on the way there or back. It works best as a first stop on a morning departure, because it shares the Ayutthaya route and has its own dress code. If you add it, drop one temple from the list above to keep the day comfortable.
Private car or guided tour?
A private car with driver gives you transport, waiting time and flexibility, but the driver is not a licensed tour guide. If you want the history explained at each site, choose a guided private tour, or read up beforehand and use a car. How much does a private car to Ayutthaya cost?
Daytrips Thailand prices the Ayutthaya day by vehicle, not by person, so a family or group pays one price for the car. At the time of writing (October 2026) the Ayutthaya one-day car with driver starts from THB 3,200 per car for a sedan or SUV and THB 3,500 for a van, with a split-payment option (small online deposit, balance to the driver) or full online payment. Temple admission, parking, food and drinks are paid separately. Always check the service page for the current price and inclusions before booking.
What to wear and bring
