Bangkok with a Private Driver: What You Can Realistically See in One Day
Updated: Oct 16
Bangkok is huge and its traffic is famous, so a private driver is most useful when your stops are grouped by area rather than scattered across the city. A well-planned day covers four or five places properly. Here is how to plan it.
Plan by area, not by wish list
Old Town (Rattanakosin)
Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew – the most important sight in Bangkok. Admission for foreign visitors is THB 500 at the time of writing. Strict dress code.
Wat Pho – the giant reclining Buddha and the birthplace of Thai massage, a short walk from the palace.
Wat Arun – across the river by a short ferry ride from Tha Tien pier.
Markets and shopping
Chatuchak Weekend Market – Saturday and Sunday only. Go early.
Chinatown (Yaowarat) – best in the late afternoon and evening for street food.
ICONSIAM – a riverside mall with an indoor floating-market food hall.
Further afield but still in Bangkok
Ancient City (Muang Boran) and the Erawan Museum in Samut Prakan. These pair well together on a southeastern loop.
Safari World for families, in the northeast of the city.
Sample itinerary
08:00 – Hotel pickup
08:30 – Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew
11:00 – Wat Pho
12:30 – Lunch near the river
14:00 – Ferry to Wat Arun (your driver meets you on the other side or waits nearby)
15:30 – ICONSIAM or a riverside café
17:30 – Chinatown for street food
19:30 – Return to your hotel
Beating Bangkok traffic
Avoid crossing the city between roughly 07:00–09:00 and 16:30–19:30 on weekdays.
Use the river ferry for short hops between Old Town and Wat Arun.
Keep the plan flexible. If a site is crowded, your driver can reorder the day.

Dress code for temples
Shoulders and knees must be covered at the Grand Palace and most temples. Avoid tight or see-through clothing. Shoes are removed before entering temple buildings.
Private driver, guided tour or taxi apps?
Taxi apps are fine for one or two short rides. A private driver is better for a full day with many stops, shopping bags or children. A guided tour adds explanation at each site. Compare private driver vs taxi apps and private driver vs guided private tour.
How much does it cost?
At the time of writing (October 2026), the Bangkok one-day car with driver starts from THB 2,600 per car. If you prefer a guide, the Bangkok Heritage Private Tour: Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun starts from THB 2,600 per car, with an English-speaking guide and temple tickets available as optional extras. Admission, parking and food are paid separately unless stated. Check the service page for current pricing.
